Colorado's Governor, Bill Ritter, has finally made a decision I agree with. Mr. Ritter announced today that he will not seek reelection. He says his decision is for the benefit of his family. There is a lot of speculation about his reasons for abruptly dropping from a race that has not even started. Personally, I think it has something to do with his poor poll numbers. I think party leadership is dropping dead weight and trying to bring in someone more popular who has a chance of winning against the Republican contender.
Governor Ritter, a good progressive liberal, has defined his term in office by expanding government and busting the state budget just as he would be expected to. As fiscally irresponsible as he is, though, my grief with him lies in two other areas:
1. In an effort to trim the bloated budget, he released inmates from the Department of Corrections. He chose to release criminals with drug charges because progressives don't think drugs are bad. He refused to see that drugs are the primary motivation behind most of our crime in Colorado-to include home invasions, burglary, robbery, and homicide.
2. In an effort to pander to liberal extremist groups, he decided to codify gender ambiguity into law across our state by making it legal for self-identified "gender confused" to use any bathroom regardless of their plumbing. This law is ripe for abuse by rapists and pedophiles.
Thankfully, Colorado does not have a large population of "gender confused" citizens (except in Trimidad I mean Trinidad) and we have not had reports of a large number of sexual assaults in public restrooms, but a grossly irresponsible law like this in a state with a higher population could have tragic consequences for young men and women who would make targets for sexual predators.
Good riddance Ritter. I won't miss you.
