Voter's Remorse (2) - How do you like me now?

Our first Voter's Remorse poll was conducted around the culmination of President Obama's first 100 days.  It accrued 86 votes and the results may be viewed here.


Since then, we have heard VP Biden admit the failure of the stimulus program to create jobs.  We have seen the push for Nationalized (Socialism) Healthcare, and we have seen our diplomatic President address (or fail to address) the revolution in Iran.  So, how do you like him now?  Do you have voter's remorse?

Independence Day

Did you know that today, July 2nd, is actually the day that the Declaration of Independence was signed?  John Adams assumed the 2nd of July would be celebrated as the birthday of our Independence.  Of course, things moved slowly for our government even before it was born.  

This weekend, July 4th, is celebrated in America as Independence Day.  We have a barbecue, hang a flag or dress in red/white/blue, light some fireworks, and hopefully send our guests home with a designated driver.  Too many Americans think that is the sum total of the story.  Much of our Nation (and virtually all of the media) neglect to ponder the rich history behind this day and why we celebrate.

As our Independence may be the most serious issue facing America today, Mockazine.com thought it appropriate to give a little history about Independence Day and what it means to our Nation.

Unlike other countries, organized around a common race, language, religion, and history; America is a melting pot born of people with diverse backgrounds independent of one another.  Oppression was our only commonality until we united together and forged a nation based on liberty and freedom.  

As Israel Ortega, of the Heritage Foundation, said last year:
Ultimately, the genius of our country lies in its people. Previous immigrant waves began with the first pilgrims from England, and included Germans, Irish, Polish, Chinese and Italians, among others. Today's Hispanic Americans are just the latest in a long list of those who left their homelands and their families in search of a better future.

In response to big government oppression, our founding fathers crafted a small federal government; first with the Articles of Confederation and later with the Declaration of Independence.  Birth is a messy event characterized by pain, anguish, bloodshed, and joy.  The birth of a nation is no less painfully, bloody, or blessed.  Our forefathers felt so strongly about American ideal of freedom and independence that they would sacrifice their businesses, reputations, property and even their lives to see it come to fruition.

This liberty and independence is not only a corporate freedom from the tyranny of King George III, it is a proclamation of the individual independence of all men from man-made government.  The Declaration of Independence surely attacks the injustices wrought by King George, but only after laying a foundation on unalienable rights for all man kind.  Our forefathers precipitated a paradigm shift in exclaiming that government is the servant of the people and government has only those rights that the people will lend to it.  The second paragraph of the Declaration says, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed . . .

As the nation grew, it made mistakes, small and large, and even participated in some shameful acts such as broken treaties with the Native American Nations and, of course, slavery.  The guiding words of the Declaration, however, have acted as a moral compass leading the republic, by Abraham Lincoln's time to wage war to end slavery.  

You may be surprised to learn that slavery was not blindly accepted by the founding fathers.  As a matter of fact, originally the Declaration of Independence included a statement condemning King George III for bringing slavery to the continent.  According to Matthew Spaulding, Ph. D., in an article titled Independence Forever:

One charge that Jefferson had included, but Congress removed, was that the king had "waged cruel war against human nature" by introducing slavery and allowing the slave trade into the American colonies. A few delegates were unwilling to acknowledge that slavery violated the "most sacred rights of life and liberty," and the passage was dropped for the sake of unanimity. Thus was foreshadowed the central debate of the American Civil War, which Abraham Lincoln saw as a test to determine whether a nation "conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal" could long endure.

Curiously, that fact is left out of many textbooks today.  In addition to the above charge, Jefferson was also careful not to mention "property" as an unalienable right because he believed it would give a foundation for slave owners to argue for the case of slavery (this omission in spite of the fact that private property is essential to the liberty of the citizen and the prevention of government tyranny).

Today, our liberty is under assault.  "Progressive" politicians have already enacted laws that tell us what kinds of light-bulbs we can use (more on that next week) and where smoker's may smoke (did you know it is illegal to smoke OUTSIDE in certain parts of California).  Hate crimes legislation makes certain thoughts illegal even though our constitution guarantees freedom of speech (the same hate crimes legislation brought before the senate would legalize pedophilia as a legitimate "sexual orientation").  Laws have even been passed in states such as Colorado and Massachusetts that make it illegal to have gender specific bathrooms--while you may have a "men's room" or a "women's room", a person who self-identifies as a different gender may use those public restrooms and be protected under the law.  These laws grossly lack Common Sense.

In addition to the legislative assaults that progressives have waged on our country, we also have a bloated, hyper-expansive government.  The problem of government hyper-expansion is not limited to the current political party in power.  Democrats AND Republicans both have progressive elements that seek to expand the reach of the federal government into our personal lives.  The recent bailouts of insurance companies, banks, and now private industries (General Motors, for example) amount to a federal takeover of these institutions.  At the same time, the president seeks to nationalize our health-care and tax carbon dioxide emissions!  Carbon dioxide, by the way, is a completely natural substance emitted by every living being that breathes oxygen.

The American experiment is an experiment in individual liberty.  As American's, we must protect the liberties passed on to us by our forefathers.  How can you repel this assault on your freedoms?  Here are some suggestions:

Research History.  As George Santayana said, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."
(Life of Reason, Reason in Common Sense, Scribner's, 1905, page 284) Too many school districts have dumbed-down their curriculum and teach a biased history that neglects the facts surrounding America's birth.  You can get a clearer picture of American history by visiting Heritage.org.

Vote for Character, not Party Affiliation.
The two-party system has failed us.  We can no longer afford to blindly vote along party lines.  We must seek out leaders with character and integrity and put them in office.

Demand Term Limits
Politicians and public servants with lifetime appointments develop a sense of entitlement and elitism. John Emerich Edward Dalberg-Acton was right when he originally wrote "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men." in a letter dated April, 1887.  We need term limits on our legislators, judges, and political executives as well as their staff.

Right now, though, you can do something easy.  Have you ever read the Declaration of Independence?  This document for which men fought and died is the cornerstone of the American Ideal.  If you have not read it, you should.  For your convenience I have posted the text here:

Common Sense

I am not reading Glenn Beck's Common Sense.  It's not that I don't want to, rather, I can not find it anywhere.  Instead, I am listening to it on Audio Book.

 Mr. Beck's premise--may I call you Glenn?  Glenn's premise is that our country is in trouble and politicians and power brokers keep the general public distracted from the real problem by pointing fingers at each other.  They (the political & Wall Street elites) keep us busy arguing over minor issues while they steer our country out of it's greatness--trading our liberty for a false sense of security.

 

I am only on the 2nd CD, but I am able to relate to Glenn's logical, sensible approach to the issues of our day.  Drawing on the inspiring words of National heroes like Thomas Payne and Martin Luther King, Jr., Beck encourages patriots to seek ways to spur a non-violent American Revolution that uses the tools of democracy to turn our country back in the right direction.  For a moment, drop your party affiliation, set your passionate issues aside, and examine our country with common sense.

For the record, I can really relate to the average American described at the beginning of the book except that I look forward to going to church.

Glenn Beck paints a big, scary picture--and he does it all in real colors, not hypersaturation.  In other words, America IS facing real problems and the politicians are more the cause and less the solution.  Listening to his book can be overwhelming when you consider the scope and nature of the conflict he is addressing.  So what can we do about it?  While we still have a voice, we can push for term limits for all public servants.  We can vote for character instead of party or charisma.  Most important, we need to engage with the facts; seeing past the smokescreen that the politicians have created.

Concurrent to the release of the book, Beck published a letter from one of his listeners.  He has attached a petition to the letter that you may sign if you agree.  At the time of this composition (Saturday night, June 20th) the petition had 116,078 signatures.

I haven't finished the book yet, but I am excited about it and I can whole-heartedly recommend it.  Of course, by the time I have this scheduled to post on Tuesday, I may have finished the whole book. I know I will be passing it on to my friends and family.

Stolen Innocence

Cho-Mos.  That's what they call them in prison; cho-mos.

He lived a tough life.  Childhood saw him bounced from one foster-home to another.  Who knows how many abuses he sufferred as he descended into a life of drug and alcohol dependence.  He was a hard worker and a nice guy, but he always had a cloud over him.

She didn't have it easy.  As a young adult, she found herself in trouble with the law--a small mistake with big consequences.  She wanted to get on the right path.  She worked hard and kept herself out of trouble.

They became friends.  When she had her baby, he stood by her and helped when he could.  She got a night job and he offered to babysit.

The baby became a toddler, barely able to speak when it happened.  The abuse was terrifying.  The wounds were horrible.  The situation was a nightmare.  He was trusted, but he betrayed--both her and the baby.  Nobody imagined it could be true, but the shocking evidence defied their disbelief.  Babies aren't designed for this kind of mistreatment.

Professing to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures. Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error.  Romans 1:22-27 NASB

Some of her friends had served time.  They talked about what they did to child molesters--cho-mos.  That's what they call them in prison; cho-mos.  They have no tolerance for cho-mos.   

In the midst of all of the angst and anger, the natural reaction of the family and friends is to want to find him and avenge the baby.   That vengence, however, can not undo what happened.  Circumventing the law only creates more trouble.  She has enough grief already.  She is already swimming in "what ifs".

Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.
Romans 12:19 NASB

The story is one of thousands that happen every day.  Children abused by adults they trust.  Some of the abusers are men, some are women.  Too few are the warning signs.  Understanding comes too late--a picture of life at it's most cruel and unfair.  My heart broke as I listened to the nurse.  I could empathize with her friends and family; angry and grieving the loss of innocence for one so young.   

These kinds of crimes are happening more frequently in our permissive society when they should be happening less.  Without a moral compass, people committ unspeakable atrocities.  So how do we protect our children?  Who do we know we can trust?  She had known him over a decade and never saw signs of this kind of behavior.

1st, Don't leave your child with a teenage or adult male who seems eager to babysit.  Frankly, most men would rather do anything else than babysit.  While some men are genuinely nice and love children in an innocent way, you can not tell for sure until after the abuse has occured.  The genuinely nice guy should understand that this protective measure is not an indictment against him.  Most sexual abuse is perpetrated by men.  As a matter of fact, a forensic nurse I spoke with said that most abuse is done by a boyfriend of the mom or trusted male friend.

2nd, Never trust a stranger.  Although not a factor in this situation, I am shocked to hear that children have been entrusted to the care of strangers who their parents had met only the night before.

3rd, Look for a licenced, reputable daycare or a responsible married couple.  Having two or more adults supervising the child offers accountability and decreases privacy, thereby decreasing the likelihood of an abusive incident.  If the need for a baby sitter is outside day-care hours, a responsible married couple may offer a reasonable option.  Some indicators of responsibility include having a steady job, displaying wisdom and discernment, raising well balanced children of their own, and not using alcohol or drugs.

4th, Never trust your child with an adult who gets drunk or high.  Alcohol and drugs affect judgement even before the user demonstrates a physical response to the chemicals.  Alcohol and chemical impairment are a significant factor in the commission of crimes.  According to the Bureau of Justice:  In the 2004 Survey of Inmates in State and Federal Correctional Facilities, 32% of state prisoners and 26% of federal prisoners said they had committed their current offense while under the influence of drugs. Among state prisoners, drug offenders (44%) and property offenders (39%) reported the highest incidence of drug use at the time of the offense. Among federal prisoners, drug offenders (32%) and violent offenders (24%) were the most likely to report drug use at the time of their crimes.

Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.  Phillipians 2:3-4 NASB


Maybe you have a friend who has been a victim.  What can you do to help?

1.  Pray for the victim's restoration and the abuser's salvation.

2.  Meet basic needs for the victim like meals, a safe place to spend a night, assistance with rent, a change of clothes.

3.  Be a shoulder to cry-on.  Listen.  Refrain from offering advice.  Sometimes just being a sounding board is more valuable.

4.  Encourage your friend to get counseling.  A Pastoral Care Ministry can greatly facilitate the healing process.  Often it is beneficial for close friends and relatives to seek counseling as well.

Glory to God

My church, Woodmen Valley Chapel, is working through a series of messages on worship.  The theme centers on the definition of worship as:

Sotomayor: Supremely Poor Judgment

Supreme Court Justice Nominee, Sonia Sotomayor, is set for review by the Senate Judiciary Committee.  On the plus side, her advocates want to focus on her life story and her background:  

  • Born in South Bronx 
  • Yankees fan
  • Hard-Working, Dedicated Parents
  • Tragic Loss of her Father while Young
  • Inspired to a Law Career by Stories of Nancy Drew
  • Diagnosed with Diabetes as a Child
  • Eventually to Become a Supreme Court Nominee
 
Her story is the American story.  Humble beginnings and childhood hardship that spur us on to greatness in our adult lives; it's a common theme that resonates throughout our great nation--the Land of Opportunity.  It is precisely the reason so many people immigrate to the United States.  It is a story only possible in a free-market society.

In all of this common ground, what do we find that distinguishes Justice Sotomayor from the rest of America to qualify her to be a Supreme Court Justice?  In reflecting on her life story, we have neglected to reflect on her judicial record.  In all fairness, President Obama's standard for nominating a SCJ is empathy, and while it makes for great Lifetime Movies, our Supreme Court needs to major in judgment, not feelings.  By the "life story" standard, my dad (who is an accomplished and successful small business owner) would make a better addition to the Supreme Court.

If not a "life narrative" then what should qualify a Supreme Court Justice?  The answer should be obvious: her experience, conduct, and rulings on the bench.  With more than a decade of experience on the appellate court, we should be able to learn a lot about her philosophy; so why isn't anyone talking about her experience?  For example: 

  • 60% of her decisions have been reversed by the Supreme Court.  Clearly she feels some obligation to keep the Supremes busy, but such a high reversal rate is a glaring red warning light that she does not belong on the Supreme Court of the United States.
  • In a recent case, Ricci v. DeStefano, empathy trumped judgment when she ruled against Ricci, an applicant to be a firefighter who scored the highest on the test but was denied the job because he was not black.

What about her personal philosophy?  Opponents to her nomination are making a big deal of two of her recent quotes:

  • “I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life,”
  • “court of appeals is where policy is made. And I know — I know this is on tape, and I should never say that because we don’t make law. I know. O.K. I know. I’m not promoting it. I’m not advocating it. I’m — you know.”  See the video below.


Perhaps much should be made of her comments.  One does not need a Psychology degree to figure out that she means what she said about making policy from the bench.  Notice in the video, that when she catches herself and realizes what she said, she does not retract her statement with strength and clarity.  Rather, she makes light of her statement recognizing that she should not have said it on tape, "you know."  

She says she would judge with empathy, which sounds nice if you are a defendant.  But isn't justice supposed to be blind and impartial?

Supreme Court Justices serve lifetime appointments.  A justice on the bench who does not understand the basic separation of powers as provided by the constitution can not exercise appropriate judgment when interpreting the constitution.  By her record and her own admission, Justice Sotomayor sees the constitution and the American rule of law as nothing more than a basis for change, a platform on which she can stand to establish policy.  If she wants to be a legislator, she should run for office where she can be held accountable by her constituents.  The judicial bench is not the place to establish public policy.  An examination of her record and her personal philosophy easily supports the assessment that this justice is not Supreme Court material.

Ida: The Link is Still Missing

Recent news reports claim that, once again, the missing link has been found.  This time, the bones of a lemur-like lower primate are supposed to seal Darwin's case for good.  The fossil has been named "Ida" (pronounced Ē-da).  The cat-sized collection of bones has been touted as the "8th Wonder of the World" but even staunch evolutionists are concerned about the hype.




It does not take a genius to see the dissimilarities between the Ida fossil and human beings, but apparently it does take a high level of indoctrination education to see the similarities.  Compare, for instance, these two articles, the first is relatively lengthy and must go into great detail to establish the basis of the theory of evolution and how intelligent men and women could come to the conclusion that a lemur could evolve into a man.  This article is found on the Age of the Sage.

The second article is much more direct and succinct.  Without the burden of indoctrination, the author is able to simply and clearly explain Ida's deficiencies as a missing link.  Read it here at Apologetics Press.

Unfortunately, some scientists are agenda driven and will go to great lengths to prove their point, whether or not the facts support them.  An elitist perspective staring down the nose at the common man leads some of our academics to see beyond the obvious and find evidence where none exists. In this case, a foot bone was all the commonality required to establish a link between a lower primate and a human being.    While much can be learned by a fossil in such good condition, common sense shows us it is not a human being and does not nearly resemble one.

Flirtation

My grandmother would visit once or twice a year.  I enjoyed her visits for many reasons, but particularly because I got to stay up late.  Whether the visit was summer or Christmas time, bed-time was a thing of myth and late night talks were the norm.  She would tell stories and then listen to my stories.  She would ask me deep, weighty questions and tell silly jokes. 

She told me she used to like to pick on the neighborhood kids. She grew Chinese hot peppers, then she would bet the neighborhood boys a nickel that they could not eat a whole one.  As the boy's head would figuratively burst in to flame, she would chuckle.  To my knowledge, she never lost a nickel.
